Peacocks take over northern Italian beach town

More than 100 peacocks have spread through the seaside town of Punta Marina, where residents are trying to manage the growing population without harming the birds. The peacocks now wander through streets, perch on balconies and gather along the beach, becoming an unusual part of daily life in the coastal community.

Locals say the birds lived for years inside an abandoned aeronautical complex near the town, but their numbers increased sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some residents complain that the peacocks block roads, damage gardens and unsettle people with their calls and behaviour. Others see them as part of the town's identity and enjoy the colour and attention they bring.

Authorities and residents are now discussing humane solutions to control the population while protecting the birds and limiting disruption in the town.
