Paulo faces ban, Waerea-Hargreaves free

Junior Paulo (l) faces a stint on the sidelines for his hit on AJ Brimson. (AAP)

The NRL's match review committee is back in the spotlight after Parramatta prop Junior Paulo was hit with a ban of up to two games for his high shot on AJ Brimson.

Paulo has been handed a grade-two careless high tackle charge for his heavy hit on Brimson in Saturday night, which appeared to be shoulder-on-shoulder.

The NSW State of Origin forward will miss one game if he pleads guilty to the charge, while that will double to two if he fights it at the NRL judiciary and loses.

The charge came just hours after Andrew Johns claimed on Nine's Sunday Footy Show that the tackle was not even worthy of a penalty.

Parramatta captain Clint Gutherson also made a similar argument as Paulo was sin-binned for the offence, while Brimson also pointed at his shoulder as the Eel walked from the field.

But that will be little consolation to Parramatta, whose coach Brad Arthur also claimed after the match there was little wrong with the tackle

"My job is to teach these players how to tackle so what do I say to Junior there?" Arthur said.

"He's done everything that we've asked him to do. That's the way I've seen it anyway.

"Obviously I need to watch it and slow it down but Junior's worked hard on his target area and we're not a team that wants to give away penalties."

The charge comes after the NRL admitted the match review committee had not gone hard enough at Melbourne prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona for a shot to the back of Parramatta's Makahesi Makatoa's head a fortnight ago.

That came just weeks after the NRL had reformed its judicial process only hours before the start of the season in round one.

Meanwhile Sydney Roosters prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has not been charged over his clash with Ryan James' legs, but can escape with a fine for a separate incident.

Waerea-Hargreaves raised eyebrows when he became became entangled with James' lower leg as the former got up to play the ball against Brisbane on Friday night.

The Broncos showed clear frustration over the incident, with Waerea-Hargreaves appearing to hold James' ankle with his head also against the leg.

But while Waerea-Hargreaves attracted a grade-one dangerous contact charge that attracts a maximum $1500 fine, it was for a later leg twist on Brisbane winger Corey Oates.
