Paul Wellens' view on major referee calls after St Helens' defeat to Leeds Rhinos

Paul Wellens has said he will seek clarity from the match official department following the controversial decision involving Jack Welsby and Sam Walters. One of the game's major flash points was the decision to penalise the St Helens star for running in after an alleged shoulder charge by the Leeds forward.

The penalty instead went Leeds' way and the Rhinos went on to win the game with a Blake Austin drop goal 14 seconds from time. St Helens would have had a penalty from a central position 40 metres out if it had gone the other way.

Wellens was complimentary of the Rhinos after the match but said he would be asking questions about the incident in the coming days.

"Well I suppose one thing I need to do there with the referees is to get some clarity and I'm hoping there's a line of communication there on what tackles are and aren't allowed. We have players within our team that like to play a certain way and play really physically and if that type of tackle is allowed then I'll teach my players to do it. If it's not we should have got the penalty. That's all I've got to say on the matter really."

Saints were shown three cards, two yellow and a red, during the game. On the incidents, Wellens said: "I thought the first one was Sione with inside pressure, he needs to make an attempt to tackle. I'd have to look at them all again but look, discipline at times last season was a real problem for us and it was a problem for us out there again tonight. So there are no excuses, we look at where we could improve because those decisions will continue if we keep putting ourselves in those positions"

He added: "Potentially they got frustrated. There were clear signs of frustration throughout the game but that's one area we need to be better. To handle that frustration and channel that frustration in a positive way rather than the response we got tonight which is very unlike us."
