Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has labelled St. James’ Park as one of his two favourite away grounds to play in. Scholes spent the entirety of his long, illustrious football career at Old Trafford, making over 700 appearances for the Reds.
The 66-time capped England international made the trip to the Northeast to face Newcastle on countless occasions as a player. At one stage during the 90s, the two clubs were the dominant forces of English football and produced some of the most memorable matches of the decade, including Newcastle’s 5-0 win in October 1996.
Speaking on Gary Neville’s Overlap, Scholes picked out St. James’ Park and Anfield as his two favourite stadiums to play in. He said: “I always used to love playing at Newcastle.

“Liverpool and Newcastle. Liverpool was harder, there was never space. Atmosphere wise, as big a game it was, if you went there and won.”
Scholes then also recalled his goal in the FA Cup final against Newcastle at Wembley as one of his most memorable strikes as a player. He scored the second of the afternoon in a 2-0 win for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, during the season in which they won the treble.
He said: “I quite liked scoring in the FA Cup final against Newcastle. I know it wasn’t the biggest game you can score a goal in, but I just thought FA Cup as a kid growing up was the big thing, playing at Wembley.”
