Paul Scholes identifies "invaluable" Casemiro role after watching Man Utd debut

Paul Scholes believes Casemiro will play an "invaluable" role in Manchester United's midfield after the Brazilian made his debut against Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The 30-year-old international, who has taken Scholes' famous No.18 shirt at Old Trafford, came on in the 80th minute at St Mary's to help Erik ten Hag's side complete a 1-0 victory away from home. That was United's second Premier League win of the season.

Midfield has been United's weakest department for several years, with many critics highlighting their need for a defensive midfielder. Despite his age, it's hoped Casemiro will fulfil that role over the next few years after his £60million move from Real Madrid.

Scholes certainly seems to think so. "I think Scott [McTominay] is better going forward, he’s been asked to play in that role as a holding midfield player, I don’t think he’s that good at it," the former England international told BT Sport after the Southampton win.

"I don’t think Fred’s good at it either. I think they’re both better when they’re going forward. With Casemiro, having that player who plays the position brilliantly behind you or next to you is invaluable. I had Michael Carrick, Roy Keane.

"It gives you freedom, I don’t even think about defending because I know the man who’s next to me or behind is in the right place all the time. It’s an insurance policy."

On Casemiro's debut, Ten Hag said: "It was quite good for him to see the Premier League, it’s a different style. He has now a pre-season, he has played some games, he played one time 90 minutes, he is fit. He had a good pre-season with a lot of training sessions, we have to integrate him in a team and a way of playing and integrate him with his teammates."

United finished sixth in the Premier League last season and haven't won a trophy since their Europa League triumph in May 2017. Casemiro is aware of the club's recent struggles and is hoping to play a role in their rise back to the top of European football.

"The opportunity to start a new challenge at Manchester United and in the Premier League is extremely exciting," he told the club's website on joining. "I have worked with many great managers in my career and, having met with Erik and heard his ideas, I can’t wait to work closely with him, his staff and my new team-mates in the coming years."

Casemiro has a fine CV, helping Real win 18 trophies during a nine-year spell - including three La Liga titles and five Champions Leagues. He's also achieved success at international level, lifting the Copa America in 2019 and reaching the final again two years later.

He added: "I’m ending one beautiful journey in Madrid whilst starting another in Manchester as determined as ever to win football matches, win trophies and make our fans proud by bringing success to this great club.

"Everybody knows the history of Manchester United, the significance of the club around the world and what it means to its supporters. To represent United is an honour and I am ready to give everything to help the team achieve our ambitions."
