Paul Scholes addresses recent Manchester United improvement under Ralf Rangnick

Paul Scholes believes it is just a matter of time before Manchester United click into gear under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, highlighting the volume of chances that they are creating.

Scholes made the admission ahead of United's showdown with Southampton at Old Trafford on Sunday lunchtime whilst reflecting on their recent setbacks against both Middlesbrough and Burnley.

United, who were held to a 1-1 draw by the Clarets on Tuesday evening at Turf Moor, created a wealth of chances against both sides but failed to secure victories, scoring just two goals in those games.

Although frustrations are mounting from the United supporters, Scholes has admitted that he would be a lot more worried if they were not creating the amount of chances that they are, admitting that he has seen improvements in his former side in recent weeks.

Scholes told BT Sport : "I think the biggest problem has been consistency with this team - you don't really know what you're going to get these days.

"I do think over the last two or three weeks, the performances, in first halves of games, have been really good. Some of the football has been quick, incisive and had good movement. The problem has been scoring goals.

"Funnily enough, they have created something like 50 chances and scored just two goals in the last two games, which is ridiculous. They have to improve that.

"Against these teams [such as Burnley], they should be out of sight by creating chances all the time, especially from down the left-hand side. Jadon Sancho and Luke Shaw seem to be linking up well.

"I think you would be more worried about this team if they weren't creating chances - but the chances are there. I think, at some point, they are going to give a team a good going over."

As proven against both Middlesbrough and Burnley, United's failure to put teams to bed whilst on top has come back to bite them.

Scholes added: "They are never fully dominant over a full game, are they?

You think if they play well for half a game, create loads of chances and don't put teams away, they are always going to be vulnerable at the other end."
