Unpopular Paul Pogba has broken his silence after facing a barrage of boos and foul language throughout Saturday’s terse encounter at Old Trafford that saw Manchester United edge Norwich City.
The France superstar then sparked further controversy as he made a gesture when heading towards his seat following a tactical substitution.
The incident, was one of a number of flashpoints on the day, as a crowd, frustrated with the lengthy recruitment procedure for a new manager, initially expressed their unhappiness with the Glazer family before ultimately registering their displeasure with the team's on-field performance.
Interim Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick defended his player in the post-match press conference as he suggested that the issues that saw the club trailing 2-0 to the bottom club in the Premier League – were not down to just one player.
And although Pogba did not directly address the situation on his Instagram account, he placed a picture of himself waving and with the remark: “Very important win for us today!”
The German said: “The fans are amazing and I can fully understand them being frustrated and disappointed but I don’t think it makes any sense to take on any individual person or player
“It is a collective responsibility. I didn’t see what he did at the end of the game but I heard about it.
“It was his reaction to the chanting during the game. As I said, I can understand the fans in a way but I don’t think it makes sense to take on one player.
“I actually thought Paul did quite well in possession during the game. It wasn’t his best position of No 8 but we had no Fred or Scotty [McTominay] so I had to make a choice.
United will face Liverpool in the Premier League on Tuesday evening on what will be a vitally important match for both clubs on Tuesday.
