Paul O'Grady to host weekend show on rival station less than a year after quitting BBC Radio 2

Paul O'Grady will host a show on a rival station less than a year since he left BBC Radio 2. The comedian and presenter stopped appearing in Radio 2's Sunday afternoon slot last August in the wake of a scheduling change which would have involved him swapping with Rob Beckett every few months.

O'Grady is now due to appear on Boom Radio for an Easter Sunday special. The independent UK radio station is aimed at Baby Boomers, defined by the National Archives as people born between 1946 and 1964.

He previously hosted a Boom Radio programme on Christmas Day 2022. This attracted a record number of listeners to the channel founded during the pandemic.

O’Grady will be joined by his long-term producer Malcolm Prince, who also worked for Radio 2 until last year. Prince was an on-air feature of the old Radio 2 show, bantering with the presenter and chuckling at his dry observations.

O’Grady, 67, said: “It’s great to be working with the team at Boom again. It already feels like my new radio home. My producer Malcolm and I are looking forward to our special TeamPOG show on Easter Sunday – who knows, this could be the start of a regular gig!”

Boom Radio co-founder Phil Riley, who launched the station alongside fellow former broadcasting executive David Lloyd, said: “It’s testament to the success of Boom Radio that a broadcaster like Paul, at the top of his game, has agreed to join us for this Easter special. We know our audience loved him at Christmas, so it’s great to have him back.”

O'Grady is one of a number of established presenters to have left Radio 2 recently. Others include Ken Bruce, Steve Wright and Vanessa Feltz.

The special Easter Sunday show on Boom Radio will begin at 2pm. O’Grady will host the show from his home alongside Prince.
