Paul O'Grady's husband has shared his first message since confirming the 'unexpected' death of the comedian and TV and radio star. Andre Portasio confirmed in a statement that O'Grady, who rose to fame on the nightclub circuit as the acerbic, platinum wig-wearing Lily Savage, died "unexpectedly but peacefully" on Tuesday evening (March 28).
In the statement issued in the early hours of Wednesday morning (March 29), Mr Portasio said: "It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening. We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss."
Tributes have since been pouring in for the much-loved entertainer from his celebrity pals and fans alike after O'Grady 'died in his own bed' with his husband by his side, one of his close friends told Good Morning Britain. Avengers star Linda Thorson told the programme that she had been speaking to her friend at 3pm on Tuesday, hours before his death.
"I can’t believe it. Just to hang up the phone and hours later for someone to die who was so happy. Full of life," Linda told Susanna Reid and Adil Ray. "But he died in his own bed. His husband was there, Andre, who he’s been with for so many years. The most divine man."
Now Mr Portasio has taken to social media to thanks everyone for their support following the tragic news and found the last photo they had taken together. It showed the pair smiling for the camera as they enjoyed a sunshine break together in January. They could be seen on a boat as they travelled across the clear blue water.
"In time I hope to write to everyone individually and thank you for all posts, messages, phone calls, emails, cards and flowers of support," Mr Portasio wrote. "I much appreciate you all taking the time to reach out. I’m so very touched and I’m sure Paul would be too!"
He then added: "Browsing for a picture I found the last picture we ever took together. Unbeknownst to us back in January this would be our last ever holiday together." And fans were rushing to show their support.
