Paul Mescal just dropped a major piece of tea that makes me want to give him a big old hug (TBH I’d find any excuse). The short-shorts loving star revealed that OG Gladiator Russell Crowe never picked up the phone to give our boy Paul some sage roman advice before filming Gladiator II.
Speaking to PEDESTRIAN.TV in Sydney, Mescal admitted he hadn’t spoken to the 60-year-old actor, despite [trailer-level spoilers] playing his son Lucius in the sequel.
“We haven’t spoken to each other,” he said, when we asked if Rusty had bestowed any Gladiator tips.
Luckily co-star Fred Hechinger cheekily chimed in and said, “I spoke with him for my role though.”
To which Paul quipped, “Yeah, Russell and Fred are fast friends.”
For those who’ve been living under a rock (or perhaps stuck in a Roman-era time warp), Gladiator II is the long-awaited sequel to the 2000 epic that will probably have us all yelling “Are you not entertained?” at our pets again.
Paul is set to play Lucius Verus, the grown-up version of the kid from the first movie, who’s apparently been hitting the gym hard for the past 24 years.
When PEDESTRIAN.TV Senior Producer Issy Phillips joked that maybe it was time for Paul to give Rusty some Gladiator tips, he shut that down ASAP.
“Absolutely not,” he said. “He needs no tips on this.”
And while he might not be besties with Rusty, he did talk to us about embracing another Aussie tradition: slutty little short shorts.
“I champion men wearing shorter shorts,” he told Head of Editorial Alex Bruce-Smith — but refuted being a short shorts style icon. “These shorts are worn by thousands upon thousands of men in Ireland, so I don’t think that would be right to say that’s in any way a style icon thing.”
We beg to differ, but okay.
Gladiator II opens in cinemas November 14. Tickets on sale now.
