Paul Mescal describes 'chaotic' GAA to confused Americans on Late Night with Seth Myers

Paul Mescal has tried to explain the concept of GAA to baffled Americans following an appearance on Late Night with Seth Myers on Friday.

The Kildare actor was on the show to talk about his brand new movie Aftersun, with the film already being met with rave reviews. Mescal previously had a successful GAA career, before he ventured into acting and he was asked about the Irish sport by a curious Seth Myers.

Speaking about the Irish sport, Mescal described it as "chaos." He said: "Chaos, pure chaos. It's basically just a mix between rugby and soccer but it's just brutal."

"You represent your parish of where you come from and it's non-professional. It's very spirited."

Mescal also explained to Myers how he once broke his jaw playing a GAA match while he was still in acting school, and at the time he told his teachers that he had been mugged. He said: "I broke my nose and my jaw, I broke my jaw two days before starting my final year in drama school. So I was like 'I'm probably going to give it a break' for the last year'.

"I found out that they don't really go hand in hand. You can't really act with a broken jaw.

"They say you're not allowed to play any sport because it's bad for like your body and stuff. And I was like 'I'll be fine', go in and face-to-face with my acting teacher, and they're like 'what's wrong', well this is so weird 'I got mugged at work.'

Mescal described it as a "nightmare" and that he spent four weeks in rehearsals. He previously captained Kildare's minor team and has been snapped in the past playing against top players such as Cormac Costello and Con O'Callaghan but went on the pursue his acting dreams.
