Paul Hollywood claims former Bake Off co-host Mary Berry once hit him over speeding

Great British Bake Off star Paul Hollywood has claimed that former co-host Dame Mary Berry once hit him with her handbag whilst he was driving her.

The 56-year old, who became a household name when the show launched in 2010, revealed that Mary, 87, lashed out over his speed.

Speaking in a Q&A session on spin-off show Extra Slice, Paul's current co-star Prue Leith asked: "What's your most unappealing habit?"

Paul replied: "I probably drive a little bit too quick. It scares a few people. I took Mary in a car once and she was hitting me with her handbag."

Prue appeared unsurprised, meanwhile, revealing her own concerns about Paul's driving.

"It scared me," she told him. "I think I only ever dared go in a car with you once."

The success of Bake Off in its early days led to it landing a prime time slot on BBC 1 in 2014, before the show moved to Channel 4 two years later leading to Mary's departure.

Since then rumours of a feud between the pair have been rife, which most notably came to life after Mary reportedly refused to take the stage with Paul at the Good Food Show.

"You could cut the tension with a knife," a source at the event in 2018 said.

It hasn't been a good month for Mary, meanwhile, who finds herself without a BBC 1 gig for the first time in a decade after her cookery show was reportedly axed.

When Bake Off left for Channel 4, Mary remained at the Beeb on a new show - Britain's Best Home Cook.

However, after just four years, it looks like the show - hosted by Claudia Winkleman - won't be returning to screens.

A source told The Sun : "This will be a big disappointment to Mary as this was a primetime alternative to the Bake Off which saw her take another high profile role.

“But it’s fair to say it never gained the same audience in a market which is already saturated with cookery programmes."
