Rookie quarterback Drake Maye turned 22 years old on Friday, and the New England Patriots celebrated his birthday by posting a video of his 2024 NFL draft call.
After being selected with the No. 3 overall pick, Maye spoke briefly with coach Jerod Mayo, lead personnel executive Eliot Wolf and owner Robert Kraft on the phone.
The excitement was clearly evident coming off one of the low points in the franchise’s history. New England had just parted ways with legendary coach Bill Belichick after a 4-13 season. The decision to draft Maye represented a new era for the organization.
“So happy for you and your family. This is your day. I’ll see you tomorrow. Just take it all in and be present,” said Mayo.

Maye didn’t win the starting quarterback job, but that seems to be more of a case of the Patriots wanting to take their time with his development. The team still has a bunch of issues along the offensive line and lack of explosive receiving weapons.
On the field, Maye has looked as good as advertised. He had an exceptional showing early in the preseason finale against the Washington Commanders when throwing 13-of-20 for 126 yards and a touchdown.
The Patriots are hopeful that one day they’ll look back on this moment as a true game-changer for the franchise.
