Several New England Patriots players are making strong cases to stay on the roster as training camp continues.
And Ty Montgomery is a perfect example.
The Patriots signed Montgomery to a two-year $3.6 million contract this past March. He comes to New England after spending last season with the New Orleans Saints as part of their backfield rotation. Now, he looks to make a name for himself on the Patriots roster, and it appears he is stating his case quite emphatically.
Montgomery enjoyed his best years as a member of the Green Bay Packers. He tallied 457 rushing yards and three touchdowns, along with 348 receiving yards in 2016. The Patriots could use that dual-threat versatility, as they look to surround quarterback Mac Jones with playmakers.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick may have hinted that Montgomery will make the team during his media availability on Tuesday. He was very complimentary of Montgomery.
“He’s been great to work with,” said Belichick. “Ty’s been a wonderful kid to have around—very smart, multi-skilled, multi-talented player. Offensively and in the kicking game, I think he’s shown the ability to be competitive in a lot of different areas.
“We’ll see how it all plays out, but I’m glad we have him. Great to work with him, and I look forward to working with him throughout the course of the year on the team in multiple roles.”
It sounds as though Montgomery may be a Swiss Army knife for the Patriots, as they look to add more versatile playmakers to the roster. The NFL is turning into an offensive-friendly league, and players like Montgomery have been able to find a home with their versatility.
Time will tell how he will be utilized with the Patriots, but Montgomery appears to be in a good position to make the team.
