The New England Patriots announced they have released undrafted rookie linebacker Jontrey Hunter on Monday.
Hunter went on the active/non-football injury list when the Patriots’ rookies reported to training camp last Friday.
It’s a tough break for the former Georgia State standout, but it isn’t the end of the road. He can use this time to get healthy and begin seeking out another NFL opportunity.
His ability to produce on the field was on full display in his final season with the Panthers, when he had 96 tackles, 1.5 sacks, four pass deflections and three forced fumbles.
The Patriots are already deep at linebacker, and Hunter’s best hope of sticking with the team would have likely been on the practice squad. Perhaps that opportunity will still be within reach once he’s healthy.
