Patrick Vieira believes Newcastle United have signed a “quality” player in Alexander Isak. Toon chiefs broke the bank to land the Swedish international, obliterating the club’s transfer record previously held by Joelinton.
Just shy of £60million is what it took to lure the 22-year-old away from Real Sociedad but he has already started paying back the fee. Isak bagged a superb debut goal against Liverpool at Anfield just hours after being granted a work permit by the UK Home office.
A second strike - and dream debut - was denied due to a controversial offside call. However, on Wednesday night’s showing, Isak looks tailor-made for the rigours of the Premier League.

Crystal Palace manager Vieira has hailed the striker ahead of today’s clash at St James’ Park. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Frenchman also tipped the Magpies as possible European contenders.
“Newcastle, with new owners, is good for the Premier League,” Vieira said. “It’s good for the city of Newcastle. It’s good for Newcastle United Football Club.
“When you spend that kind of money on one player (Isak), you will improve your team. He’s a quality player, there is no doubt about it.
“They’ve built a team that can be really competitive with Isak and players with Premier League experience. Of course, they have a team that can fight for European positions.”
Vieira also confessed to feeling relieved about the transfer window being shut amid speculation regarding Wilfried Zaha’s future. He added: “It’s good because players who are here know they’re here and players who are not know they’re not here. We can concentrate on the next game against Newcastle.”
