Patrick Vieira disagrees with Eddie Howe over disallowed Newcastle United goal

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira faced the wrath of Newcastle United supporters after claiming the decision to overturn the Magpies' goal was the correct one.

Tyrick Mitchell bundled the ball into Palace's net midway through the second-half, sending St. James' Park into rapture. However, Joe Willock's collision with Eagles goalkeeper Victor Guaita in the build-up led to VAR intervening, and subsequently referee Michael Salisbury overturning the goal.

Newcastle supporters and Eddie Howe felt Mitchell pushed Willock into the Palace goalkeeper, causing the collision. Vieira, however, felt Salisbury was correct to let his team off the hook.

“After looking at the images after the game, I think that was the right decision from the referee,” Vieira said. "I’ve seen the images and I think if there is no Newcastle player, our goalkeeper will get the ball.

"That contact, of course, had a massive impact on the goal. That’s why I believe it was the right decision from the referee.”

Howe didn't feel the same as his managerial counterpart in his post-match press conference, venting his frustration at another decision against his team. “I didn’t think it should have been disallowed," the Newcastle boss admitted.

"I thought it was a push on Joe Willock in the build-up to the ball coming in. Joe’s momentum is fixed at that opponent from his opponent and then carries him into the goalkeeper. But without that push there’s no way Joe would have gone in with that force, so for me it’s not a foul.

“If anything, it’s a penalty if it’s not a goal. I was very surprised by the outcome. I think they [the officials] were swayed by the fact, and this is just my opinion, that the goalkeeper stayed down. I think that ultimately led to the goal being disallowed.”
