Glentoran released a brief statement following the announcement, wishing McClean well and confirming they will continue to hold the player's contract for the remainder of its term, which has over two years to run.
The sudden departure sparked plenty of social media comment from Irish League fans, with many suggesting there had been a fall-out between McClean and Glentoran.
The former Derry City defender took to social media on Wednesday evening to "clear something up here".
McClean added: "I wasn't subletting my house that I was living in. I wasn't running a brothel.
"I wasn't drug tested and caught!! I never had a fall out with anyone at the club.
"The reason I've decided to step away from football was because I wasn't happy and I hadn't been for a long time! A smile can hide a lot of things but I couldn't do it any longer!
"I've been given an opportunity at a career change with more freedom to live my life and enjoy the simple things.
"I've had a decent football career and there is some people jumping at the chance to try ruin my name plus I wouldn't usually respond to silly rumours but when you have friends and family asking questions I think it needs addressed!"
McClean made 142 appearance for the Glens and won the Irish Cup with the East Belfast club in 2020.
Glentoran's statement read: "Patrick McClean has informed the club of his desire to pursue other avenues outside of football.
"Our players, staff and directors would like to thank Patrick for his contribution to Glentoran.
"GFC will retain Patrick's registration for the remainder of his contract."
