Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes may be synonymous with his red jersey, but his family abode is notably more pared-back. From what we have seen, almost the entirety of his home boasts a neutral color palette – but no space is quite as soothing as his living space, which has impressed color experts the most.
The room in question exemplifies decorating with neutrals, starting with cream paint that compliments the beige curtains and white fireplace. The palette and furnishings are minimal (but nonetheless warm), and it's a look that experts call 'hushing our home.'
According to Lick's color psychologist, Tash Bradley, 'hushing our home' translates to creating personal sanctuaries we can retreat to when we want to feel safe, calm and comforted. Considering Patrick's schedule, we're not surprised his living room color choices were likely picked with peace in mind. However, this technique is replicable far beyond Missouri.
'In order to hush your home, avoid colors that can make a room feel visually cluttered and overstimulating, such as bright reds, oranges, or primary yellows. Instead, opt for colors that don’t ask too much from you,' Tash says.
For the perfect starting point, we should draw inspiration from Patrick and Brittany Mahome's color choices and opt for beiges, whites, and creams that complement one another without feeling overpowering.
Alongside these neutrals, Tash recommends yellow and red-based neutrals, earthy greens, gentle blues, and soothing pinks that are similarly 'easy on the eye' and 'bring a sense of calm and harmony into our home.'
'These warmer tones help to create a cozy, welcoming environment and act as the perfect backdrop to make your carefully selected items stand out and not look cluttered.'
Colors aside, Tash explains that Patrick's minimalist approach to furnishings equally allows his living room to feel 'hushed.' While we can only see a section of the wider space, this area is undeniably minimalist and brings our focus to the aforementioned fireplace and undressed windowsills.
'Hushing your home means adopting a more minimal approach to living. Although ‘minimal’ may trigger associations of restrictive living or dull decor, hushing your home in practice offers the complete opposite – it gives furnishings room to breathe and shine,' Tash reassures.
'Hushing is working out what you love most about the items in your home and working out which ones you want to keep and which ones to rehome. In hushed spaces, every item is chosen based on its level of usefulness, beauty, and the amount of joy you get from it, giving your space a curated feel. Anecdotally, at least, it’s true that a cluttered home creates a cluttered mind. A hushed home, by contrast, helps to hush a busy mind and help you switch off.'
