Patrick J. Adams reveals ‘shocking’ way The Madison script mirrored events in his real life

Patrick J. Adams has spoken about how the script for The Madison originally hit too close to home.

The newly released series, from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, follows a New York family relocating to the Madison River valley of central Montana after the tragic loss of a family member.

Earlier this week at the show’s premiere in New York City, the Suits alum admitted how eerie it was to read the script for the first time, given how closely it had mirrored a sudden loss his family had recently experienced.

“My family suffered a pretty tragic and very sudden loss that had left our family reeling and confused and heartbroken,” he said in an interview with People.

“And so when I read this, I was just sort of shocked at how much of it aligned with what was going on in my life and how I had spent that last year being with my family and taking care of each other and trying to look after my mother,” he continued.

In addition to Adams, ‘The Madison’ stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Beau Garrett, Matthew Fox, Elle Chapman, Alaina Pollack, Ben Schnetzer, Kevin Zegers, Rebecca Spence, Danielle Vasinova and Will Arnett (Getty Images for Paramount+)

He explained that because of the connection to his current life, the role felt like “faith.”

“And you're like, well, I've been sort of preparing for this unknowingly for a while, and it felt like it made perfect sense,” Adams said.

The Madison was originally expected to be a direct sequel to Yellowstone, but it is now being treated as a standalone series. In the show, Pfeiffer plays Stacy Clyburn, a grieving New Yorker who relocates her family to Montana. In addition to Adams, Kurt Russell, Beau Garrett, Matthew Fox, Elle Chapman, Alaina Pollack, Ben Schnetzer, Kevin Zegers, Rebecca Spence, Danielle Vasinova and Will Arnett also star.

Although it remains within the broader Yellowstone universe, the Western drama is said to be Sheridan’s “most intimate work to date,” according to a press release. The series is “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection” that “examines the ties that bind families together.”

The Madison is just the latest show from Sheridan. Its release comes just weeks after the premiere of the TV creator’s latest Yellowstone spinoff, The Marshals, starring Yellowstone alum Luke Grimes.

Yellowstone, which aired from 2018 to 2024, centered on the Duttons, a six-generation family of ranchers in Montana. The Kevin Costner-led series was a smash hit, consistently drawing massive viewership. Its fifth and final season premiere smashed records, drawing in 12.1 million viewers.

While the first three episodes of The Madison are available to watch now, the last three episodes will be released on Paramount+ on March 21.
