Patrick Bamford receives 'threats' after Newcastle penalty miss as Leeds slam 'unacceptable' abuse

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has been the subject of online 'threats' after missing a penalty in the draw with Newcastle United. The striker was denied from the spot by Nick Pope during the 2-2 draw at Elland Road on Saturday.

Luke Ayling gave the hosts a dream start after only seven minutes, pouncing on a rebound to fire Sam Allardyce's side in front. Leeds then had a chance to double their advantage from the spot after Joelinton brought down Junior Firpo with a clumsy challenge.

Bamford stepped up, only to see Pope deny his inital strike before clawing the ball away from danger. Newcastle's number nine Callum Wilson would go on to score twice from the spot, but the visitors would have to settle for a point courtesy of Rasmus Kristensen's deflected late strike.

Leeds have released a statement on Sunday afternoon to condemn the 'completely unacceptable' online abuse directed at the striker. The club insist those who target their own players are not 'welcome' at Elland Road.

The statement reads: "Overnight Patrick Bamford and his family have received completely unacceptable online abuse including several threats via Twitter. The time for this behaviour to stop is now.

"Those making threats do not reflect our fan base and are not welcome at our club. We would like to thank all those supporters who have reached out to Patrick and his family to show their support."
