Patrick Bamford pays 'most thoughtful' tribute to Nigel Doughty as Nottingham Forest host Leeds

Former Nottingham Forest striker Patrick Bamford paid tribute to the late, great Nigel Doughty after Sunday's game against Leeds.

Bamford, who now plays for Leeds, came through the academy ranks at Nottingham Forest before leaving for Chelsea in January 2012. Nigel Doughty, his godfather, rescued the Reds from administration in 1999 and stepped down as chairman in 2011.

Eleven years and one day Doughty's death, Bamford laid flowers in tribute to him before the match, in front of members of the Doughty family.

"I actually thought Forest as a club would do something, considering it was his anniversary yesterday," Bamford said after the match.

"But obviously he was a really close family friend of mine. I know (his son) Michael and (his daughter) Helen were here watching today, so that was more for support for them.

"If it wasn't for him, then Forest might not be where they are today so I think everyone owes a lot to him at this club."

On Twitter after the match, Michael Doughty said thank you to Bamford for the gesture and expressing what it meant to the Doughty family.

He said: "Arrived at @NFFC today the day after the big man's 11 year anniversary to experience one of greatest bits of friendship I've ever felt. Safe to say there wasn't a dry eye in my family.

"Thank you mate @Patrick_Bamford for remembering and marking it in the most thoughtful way."
