Patrick Bamford 'miss of the season' leaves Sky Studio screaming

Patrick Bamford produced an almighty clanger in the dying seconds against Leicester to deny Leeds a desperately-needed victory.

The striker fired wide from a metre out with the goal gaping as the clock ticked over into injury time, causing a mini meltdown in Sky Sports' Soccer Special studio (nice tongue-twister for you there).

"Oh my word! Bamford!" Clinton Morrison shouted. "Look at everyone in the studio! They've got their hands on their head. I cannot believe Patrick Bamford's missed. Two yards out, it's flicked on, no one's there, goes with his right foot and puts it completely wide."

Fans on social media branded the gaffe the "miss of the season" with some even suggesting it could ultimately send Leeds down.

"Unbelievable. Miss of the season, that," one supporter tweeted, while another said: "Huge miss in terms of the relegation scrap. That could be sooo costly."

A third joked: "Bamford showing his Chelsea striker heritage by missing an open goal," while a fourth insisted the miss didn't surprise at all, writing: "Show me a man who asks 'how has he missed that?', and I'll show you a man that's not seen Patrick Bamford play in front of a crowd before."

Luis Sinisterra gave Javi Gracia's men the lead in the first half, shortly after Youri Tielemans' 25-yard blast was agonisingly ruled out by VAR.

Leicester hit back with 10 minutes remaining via Jamie Vardy's first goal in six months, and although the Foxes dominated the ball throughout the contest, Bamford's last-gasp miss will make it feel like two points dropped rather than a point earned for the home side.

The result leaves Leeds in 16th place on 30 points, a point above Leicester in 17th and two points above Everton in 18th - though the Toffees have a game in hand.

Bamford joined Leeds from Middlesbrough in 2018. He smashed in 25 goals in two seasons in the Championship, and continued his hot streak following his side's promotion to the Premier League in 2020, netting 17 goals as Leeds finished ninth.

The following campaign was an injury-riddled nightmare with Bamford playing just nine times in the league overall, and although he's spent most of the current season injury-free, the goals (three in 24 games) have dried up.
