Patrice Evra's 2013 explanation on what is wrong at Man Utd shows how little has changed

Manchester United are seemingly suffering from the same problems Patrice Evra highlighted back in 2013.

The Red Devils had a disastrous title defence with David Moyes the season after Sir Alex Ferguson left the club as they appointed the Scot as his successor. The West Ham boss lasted just ten months in the charge as United ended up finishing in the seventh spot, outside the European spots - a scenario that is unfolding under Ralf Rangnick this term.

Evra was interviewed halfway through that campaign revealing United had lost their "winning mentality" just six months after Fergie had left his post. The Frenchman insists the squad still backed the new manager, but ultimately he was given the impossible task of replacing the legendary icon.

He told Sky Sports: "It's a really difficult time, we never used to be in that position but it is a new challenge. That's why we have to unite as a team, don't let the critics get to the team. But sometimes you deserve it because that's the name of the game.

"Moyes is working so hard every day, trying to get the best out of the team. It's that consistency because that's the strength of Manchester United. I will go deeper and say I think we've lost that winning mentality and spirit. That's why I'm really not happy, we need to go back and find that winning mentality.

Asked if their problems were down to the change in manager, Evra added: "All my life, when I make mistake, I will never blame somebody else. I can't imagine any of the players blaming him either. Wee have more responsibility and can't say it's because daddy Ferguson left the club. That's what I don't want.

"I don't think any player can let a manager down because then they are letting themselves down. But we need to win games to prove that we love David Moyes, there is no point in saying it in an interview. The Ferguson era is over, we have to get behind the new manager and take responsibility on the pitch."

Almost a decade on and it seems very little has changed as they are still suffering from a post-Fergie hangover. Many feel Moyes didn't get a fighting chance at United which has been vindicated to an extent with United still searching for that "winning mentality" that Evra alluded to.

Was David Moyes harshly treated at Manchester United? Comment below

Moyes says his time at Old Trafford "didn't end very well" but has no hard feelings. He said: "I believe if you're a leader giving bad news it should be done with dignity. I think whatever business, there will be things in life you give bad news and I think there should be a style you do it in.

"When you're one of the biggest sports industries in the world, you should have people who know how to do that and I felt in the end, it didn't end very well. It was done via come into the office early morning and meet, but a lot of these situations, the media got ahold of it which is the norm and it can happen, that's the world we're in.

"I hold no grudges, I'm well moved on, I like going back to Old Trafford. I think a lot of the supporters don't see me in as bad a light as some do, they understand how difficult it was."
