Patrice Evra claims two players have sparked Manchester United revival since Man City defeat

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has claimed that Luke Shaw and Casemiro have helped Reds boss Erik ten Hag "get back in control" following the derby defeat to Manchester City.

The Reds have responded well to the loss at the Etihad earlier this month, with Ten Hag's men securing victories over Everton in the Premier League and Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League.

Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed his 700th club goal during the 2-1 win over the Toffees last weekend after Antony had levelled proceedings in the first period. Meanwhile, Scott McTominay came off the bench to score a crucial winner for United in added time in midweek.

United's performance against Pep Guardiola's side was met with widespread criticism, however, former left-back Evra has suggested that the team deserves credit for how they have reacted to the disappointing defeat against their bitter rivals.

The Frenchman praised Ten Hag's decision to play Casemiro and Shaw from the start against Everton, claiming that the two changes were vital in the Reds getting back to winning ways.

"I was massively pleased with Man United's win last time out, because Everton is a tough place to go. We got a good result in the Europa League, Cristiano didn't score but he had a good game, then against Everton he didn't start but came on and scored," Evra told Betfair.

"Football is so quick. We should give lots of credit to Ten Hag, because he made some more big decisions, he put Luke Shaw back in the team, Casemiro finally started and I think those two changes made the difference.

"I think Luke Shaw had enough with people saying [Tyrell] Malacia is the next Patrice Evra and he felt like he was the second player. I think he had a great performance and we have to give him credit. I love it when there's massive competition at full-back."

Prior to the win over Frank Lampard's men, Shaw had only started two Premier League matches, with Malacia having impressed since his summer switch. The win at Goodison Park was also Casemiro's first start in the top flight since joining from Real Madrid in the summer, and Evra lauded the Brazilian after he was named Man of the Match.

He added: "Finally Casemiro started. He doesn't need to adapt because he played in the Champions League against Premier League sides. Everyone was impatient and he ended up the Man of the Match. I'm not surprised.

"I think Ten Hag is in control. I was scared after the City game that some players would start losing faith in him but you can tell he's in charge and he's going to bring the team to their maximum level and that win against Everton was a massive result.

"Back in the day we would have lost that match, but we didn't and it's down to Ten Hag. He will refuse to let them go back to that mentality when they accept losing. He is the man.

"The two previous wins were fundamental and we now need another win and Cristiano Ronaldo to score again so that the goal machine carries on and on."
