Pat Sajak Set to Retire From One of the Longest-Running Game Shows

After serving as one of the longest-running television hosts in history, “Wheel of Fortune’” star Pat Sajak has announced his retirement.

“Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last,” Sajak wrote in a statement. “It’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all. (If nothing else, it’ll keep the clickbait sites busy!)”

But Sajak isn’t completely leaving the world of “Wheel” behind him, as he will continue a partnership with the program as a consultant for producer Sony Pictures Television.

“As the host of ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ Pat has entertained millions of viewers across America for 40 amazing years. We are incredibly grateful and proud to have had Pat as our host for all these years and we look forward to celebrating his outstanding career throughout the upcoming season,” Suzanne Prete, executive vice president of game shows at Sony Pictures Television, shared in a statement. “Pat has agreed to continue as a consultant on the show for three years following his last year hosting, so we’re thrilled to have him remaining close to the ‘Wheel of Fortune’ family!”

“Wheel of Fortune” began in 1975 with host Chuck Wooler. Sajak, a former Los Angeles weatherman, began hosting the daytime edition in 1981. He took over the nighttime duties in 1983, and has been a staple in American homes ever since, a familiar face that often accompanied TV dinners and excruciating close calls where the wheel almost brought a contestant fortune and glory….only to land a much less exciting option. For his efforts, Sajak won the Daytime Emmy for outstanding game show host three times, along with 19 total nominations.

Who Should Take Over for Pat Sajak?

Social media already has some hot takes on who should take over the Throne.

Vanna White

White has been the co-host of Wheel of Fortune for four decades herself, and since the world of evening game shows is still largely male-dominated, many feel it’s time she got a promotion.

But if you need a back-up, then perhaps consider…

LeVar Burton

Many feel like the “Reading Rainbow” legend was denied his rightful spot as the new host of “Jeopardy!,” and feel like “Wheel” would make for a nice consolation prize.
