Passport warning with two days left before price change kicks in

For the first time in five years, the price of getting a new passport will rise for adult and child applications.

From February 2, passport applications will be more expensive as the fees will rise from £75.50 to £82.50 for adults and £49 to £53.50 for children. Postal applications will also rise from £85 to £93 for adults and £58.50 to £64 for children.

The new rules have been introduced by the Home Office, despite the government making no profit from passport applications. If you need a new passport for any holidays this year, it's recommended you get your application off before the rules change and you're forced to pay more.

According to the government website, priority service fees are also being aligned so that all customers will pay the same.

For overseas customers, the price fee for a standard UK passport application online will rise from £86.00 to £94.00 for adults and £56 to £61.00 for children.

And for those overseas who want to use a paper application will see prices rise from £95.50 to £104.50 for adults and £65.50 to £71.50 for children.

Guidance on the government website reads: "The new fees will help the Home Office move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation. The government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications.

"The fees will also contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas, including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders. The increase will also help enable the government to continue improving its services."

The average waiting time for standard passport applications to be completed is around 10 weeks, as 95 percent of them have been turned around in this timeframe since January last year.

However, if you are planning on going on holiday anytime soon, you should make sure to get your application off in plenty of time.

All new passports will continue to feature the Queen's image rather than King Charles, despite the Monarch's death last year.
