Edinburgh tourists heading to Spain for the holidays this year are being issued an urgent warning.
In Spain, hotels have a legal obligation to register the passport details of their customers at check-in. This was put in place initially to ensure that tourists didn't depart the hotel without paying their bill.
However, the Foreign Office has reportedly recommended that people don't leave their passports at the hotel reception to collect later, but instead wait until staff have taken details or made a photocopy, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Sean Tipton, a spokesman for the Association of British Travel Agents told the Daily Mail: "In the past, many hotels retained passports to ensure that customers didn't sneak off without settling their bills.
"But in the days of credit cards this is largely unnecessary. Although it is highly unlikely that your passport would be misused, lost, or stolen by your hotel, once your details have been taken down, you are quite within your rights to insist that it is returned."
Advice also states that it is important tourists don't carry all their valuables at once, and they should keep a photocopy or scanned copy of their passport in a safe place.
Tourists should also take extra care to guard their money and personal belongings when collecting or checking in luggage at the airport, and while arranging a car for hire.
It was also reported by Edinburgh Live earlier this month that the Spanish Government issued a warning to tourists, due to an increase in dengue fever cases.
The local Government confirmed that six German tourists were infected with dengue fever between May and November 2022.
And now, there are increased fears that there could be a second wave of the infection on the horizon during the busiest time of the year - the summer holidays.
The Spanish Government has said that there is a "moderate" risk of people contracting the bug throughout the summer.
