Passengers fury after litter flung around in first-class train carriage

Train passengers have hit out at having to sit among piles of rubbish in a first class carriage with images showing litter strewn about on a rail service.

TransPennine has now apologised to commuters who were forced to sit in the first class carriage where rubbish appeared to have been thrown around and had not been cleaned, reported YorkshireLive.

Images sent to the outlet by a customer on board the 23.13 train from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield on Saturday (March 19), shows "tea making items" and other debris scattered across the first class carriage's floor.

The video was sarcastically titled "Lovely in First Class".

TransPennine Express (TPE) said it believes the litter and "items of catering stock" had been thrown around the carriage by passengers.

One passenger on board the train on Saturday night said: "It was an absolute mess, I could not believe the state of it. This was the last train of the day from Manchester to Sheffield but I still would not expect it to look like that.

"It looked like someone had just chucked all the tea making items all over the floor and no one had bothered to clean it up."

In response, a spokesperson for TPE said the messy carriage did not represent "the standard of cleanliness we usually provide".

"It is really disappointing to see one of our train carriages being treated in this way with litter and items of catering stock being thrown on the floor by rail users," they added.

TPE apologised to those who had travelled in the carriage and confirmed it is now looking into what happened.

The spokesperson added: "Keeping our trains as clean as possible is a priority for us and we currently have an enhanced cleaning programme in place with a team of 150 colleagues working hard to create the best possible travelling environment for our customers."
