Woman dragged 40ft along city centre tram platform after bag got trapped in door

A woman was dragged along by a tram for more than 40ft when her bag became trapped in a door. The shocking incident happened at Shudehill Metrolink stop in Manchester city centre at about 11.15am on May 27.

An investigation was launched into what happened by The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). The RAIB listed brief details of the incident on its website.

They revealed that the woman struggled to free herself after her bag became trapped in the tram's closing doors. When the tram then pulled away, she was dragged 13 metres before falling onto the platform.

She sustained injuries to her face and hand. Investigators said the tram driver was unaware of the woman's presence when the tram departed from the tram stop.,

The RAIB says it has carried out a 'preliminary examination' into the circumstances surrounding the incident and will publish a 'safety digest' in the coming weeks. The safety group's web page explains: "When it is clear that the safety learning from an event has been identified by a previous investigation or relates to compliance with existing rules, we may choose to publish a safety digest, rather than carry out a full investigation."

A spokesperson for the Metrolink operator, KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM), said: “An incident occurred at Shudehill Metrolink stop on Friday 27 May 2022 that involved a passenger’s bag becoming trapped in the doors of a departing tram. This resulted in the passenger falling on the platform and sustaining facial injuries.

“KAM immediately reported the incident and have liaised with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and provided evidence to aid the initial investigation. RAIB have confirmed that they will not be investigating the incident but will publish a Safety Digest on their website. RAIB issue Safety Digests as a way of quickly sharing important safety messages.”

TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, added: “Any incident that results in an injury to a passenger is upsetting and we wish the woman involved a speedy recovery. The safety of staff and passengers is our priority and we now await the RAIB’s digest to see whether any lessons can be learnt from this incident.”
