Passenger jet diverted to Edinburgh Airport as pilot deals with mid-air emergency

A passenger plane has been diverted to Edinburgh after declaring a mid-air emergency on the way to its destination.

The Scandinavian Airlines flight between Sweden and Ireland took a swift turn over Fife after sounding the 7700 squawk code.

The aircraft, which left Arlanda airport in Stockholm at 9:35am, was due to arrive in Dublin at 11:10.

However, it is now set to land in the capital following an incident on the journey with emergency crews on standby.

The 7700 code is used to denote an incident requiring on the ground support while the plane is in the air.

An Edinburgh Airport source confirmed the diversion was due to a medical issue on board, however the nature of the incident remains unclear.

Passengers are now set to disembark from the Airbus A320 in Edinburgh before continuing onward to their destination.
