Rangers fans reacted with fury the last time Partick Thistle won at Ibrox as livid light blue legions launched a post-match demonstration against manager and club legend John Greig - with future strike star Mo Johnston inspiring the Jags to a shock victory.
Michael Beale’s side and Scottish Cup holders welcome Thistle to Ibrox for a fifth round tie on Sunday with Ian McCall's Championship promotion hopefuls as big as 28/1 with the bookies to stun Michael Beale's men.
The Maryhill side haven't won at Ibrox since October 1981. They were also outsiders that day - 13/2 with the bookies - but it didn't stop Peter Cormack's side from winning 2-0 thanks to goals from George Clark and Johnston, who would later go on to play for Celtic via Watford, before being part of arguably the biggest Scottish transfer story of all time when he moved to Rangers under Graeme Souness, after previously agreeing to return to Celtic from Nantes.
But the defeat, in front of 17,000, sparked angry protests from Rangers fans as a mob gathered outside the front door at Ibrox and chanted 'Greig must go.’ Greig said afterwards: "There is no need for panic measures. Thistle deserved their win, they wanted it more than us and were worthy winners."
Thistle had lost their first five league games of the season and were struggling near the bottom of the league, but they were too strong for Rangers that day. Manager Cormack said after the game: "We had a terrible start to the season, but I am delighted by the way the players have applied themselves since then. I thought we played very well and deserved the win.”
It would be Thistle's last taste of success in Govan for 42 years and counting and they ended up being relegated that season anyway. Rangers would finish in third place behind champions Celtic and Aberdeen. Previous to that, their last win at Ibrox was in 1957.
Greig - later voted as the 'Greatest Ever Ranger' by the fans, lasted another two years in the Ibrox hotseat before resigning and being replaced by Jock Wallace. Cormack left Firhill in 1984 and would later go on to manage Anorthosis Famagusta, Botswana and Morton and was in charge of Cowdenbeath for ten days before he was bizarrely sacked without managing in a game in 2000.
