French publisher Nacon has revealed an exciting new trailer for a brand new title based on Sci-Fi, cult hit Robocop, due for release in June 2023.
The Robocop franchise of films, directed by Paul Verhoeven was known for its action, dark satirical humour and extreme violence encapsulating the 80's vision of the future with hyper-violence and drug use, corporate greed and urban decay.
Based on the classic 1987 film, which is set in a near future, dystopian Detroit, greedy corporations have privatised the police force and led to out-of-control crime. Police officer, Alex Murphy is killed in the line of duty and is brought back to life as a near-invincible cyborg called Robocop.
The chrome cop has been featured in several games for arcade and home consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore, Game Boy, Mega Drive and Super Nintendo to name just a few.
These game adaptations are based on the films and comics that have been released over the years although mostly in the 90s at the height of the character's popularity.
Most recently, Robo returned to gaming back in 2003 with Robocop on GameCube, PC, PlayStation 2 the original Xbox. However, received mostly negative reviews regarding the graphics, controls, slow pace and frustrating gameplay mechanics.
Although the polished patrolman did appear as a playable DLC character in beat-em-up Mortal Kombat 11.
Nacon announced the game back in July 2021 but last week a trailer was shown Nacon Connect showcase revealing more details and a near future release date of July 2023.
The new game will be Developed by Teyon who previously worked on another iconic 80's action franchise with Terminator Resistance. Resistance is a well-regarded first-person shooter set in the Terminator universe and known for being incredibly loyal to its source material.
The brand new Robocop game will feature actor Peter Weller will be reprising his role with his voice and likeness also being used, which was shown in the trailer.
Weller famously portrayed RoboCop in the first two titles but not in its subsequent films or spin-offs, and fans are overjoyed to hear him return.
The trailer shows off brief gameplay as well as some early in-game cutscenes, as you can expect it shows gangs of punks running riot in Detroit, followed by the iconic Robocop leaving his patrol car to law down the law.
The trailer is light on details but the game appears to be a First Person Shooter with a mixture of gun and melee combat and even features Robocop's iconic Auto 9 handgun and targeting mode, although how this will work in-game is unknown.
Murphy's green 80's era, LED targeting systems used to take out hard-to-hit enemies, and could function like the Fallout Series V.A.T.S system.
The Steam page says
"Become the iconic part man, part machine, all cop hero as you attempt to bring justice to the dangerous, crime-ridden streets of Old Detroit. Armed with your trusty Auto-9, factory-built strength, years of experience on the force and a variety of tools at your disposal, you will fight forces seeking to destroy the city you call home in an all-new first-person, explosive hunt for the truth. You have the power to decide how to fulfil prime directives in your own way, but as the story unfolds proceed with caution because corruption and greed know no limits.
Prepare yourself to... PROTECT THE INNOCENT AND UPHOLD THE LAW"
Details about the gameplay, plot and even the minimum system requirements are still unknown for now but it will be released for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch consoles in July 2023.
