Parliament proceedings | Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die on bitter note amidst Opposition protests

The Rajya Sabha proceedings ended on a bitter note, adjourning sine die without Chairman Venkaiah Naidu’s customary concluding remarks, as the Opposition parties led by the Shiv Sena protested against alleged corruption in connection to a crowdfunding drive to save INS Vikrant. An FIR has been filed against BJP leader Kirit Somaiya and his son Neil.

The House adjourned within 19 minutes of commencing the proceedings. Soon after the Zero Hour began, which allows the members to raise issues of national importance, the Opposition members began their protest. Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut moved into the well, raising the alleged scam connected to INS Vikrant. Members of the NCP, Congress and the TMC stood at their seats protesting in solidarity.

The Enforcement Directorate recently attached properties owned by Mr. Raut’s wife and his close associate.

Mr. Naidu pleaded with the Opposition to let the House run at least for the Zero Hour, saying “this sort of disturbance will undermine the privilege and prestige of the House”. He had a war of words with Mr. Raut. He said members cannot dictate to the Chair.

“This is totally against the democratic spirit, norms of the House, dignity and decorum of the House. I feel very sad,” Mr. Naidu stated, announcing the adjournment without giving his concluding address.
