The city's streets have been blocked off, with numerous police officers on patrol and imposing metal-fence security barriers erected along the River Seine. A total of up to 45,000 police and gendarmes, along with 10,000 soldiers, have been deployed to enhance Olympic security.
French Rail Network Sabotaged
France experienced widespread acts of vandalism, including arson attacks on its high-speed rail network, causing delays and disruptions for travelers heading to Paris from various parts of the country and Europe. Three fires were reported near the tracks on the high-speed lines of Atlantique, Nord, and Est, prompting French officials to condemn these actions as criminal.
Brazil Soccer Legend Robbed
Brazilian soccer legend Zico reported a robbery in Paris, where a bag containing valuables was stolen from his vehicle in the 19th district. Paris prosecutors have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Last Security Meeting Before the Ceremony
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin convened a security meeting with government and police officials just hours before the opening ceremony. Darmanin expressed confidence in the implementation of all security measures and commended the efforts of law enforcement personnel and bomb disposal experts deployed for the event.
Thwarting Plots Against the Olympics
French authorities have successfully thwarted several plots aimed at disrupting the 2024 Olympics, including the recent arrest of a Russian man suspected of planning to destabilize the Games. With France on high alert due to past extremist attacks and ongoing international tensions, stringent security measures have been put in place to safeguard the event.
Blocking Suspects from the Games
Approximately 1,000 individuals suspected of potential foreign interference have been prevented from attending the Olympics, following extensive background checks on volunteers, workers, and other personnel involved in the Games. Out of the 5,000 individuals blocked from attending, around 1,000 were flagged for suspected foreign meddling or espionage.
