The Municipality of Paris has enforced a new rule that requires riders of motorized two-wheeled vehicles to pay fees for parking in the capital, although many were hoping for the suspension of the decision.
From now on, owners of motorized two-wheeled vehicles shall pay 3 euros when they park in the heart of the capital, and 2 euros when they park outside administrative Paris.
Those who live in Paris can pay to be part of a subscription scheme – at a cost of €22.50 a year, and an additional 0.75 euros per day.
Riders of electric two-wheeled vehicles and people with disabilities are exempted from the newly imposed fees, however, everyone should register their vehicles on a website that was launched in late June.
"We had to stop making an exception for scooters and motorbikes, " David Belliard, Paris deputy mayor in charge of mobility and city space, told Agence France Press (AFP), acknowledging that the new rules were "difficult" but were also "necessary to fight pollution. "
The French Federation of Angry Motorcyclists (FFMC) meanwhile slammed the measure which discriminates notably against "poor people who live in the suburbs," according to FFMC Paris region boss Jean-Marc Belotti.
