Parents say yes to their kids' demands for a whole day

A mum and dad let their children call the shots for 24 hours - and said it just showed that sometimes the rules "just need to be broken". For a whole day, they decided to say yes to everything the youngsters asked for.

It included what to eat, the clothes they wanted to buy and a fun trip on the train. They were also able to buy treats in a toy and stationery shop using money from their grandparents.

Saying yes to the kids for 24 hours - often with hilarious results - has been a popular subject of many parenting videos on YouTube in the last few years. The trend has also been a hit with parenting bloggers and Instagrammers.

Sarah Whitley tried it out for Metro with children Theo, four, and Immy, two. She said she often feels like a "killjoy" when she and husband Tom have to lay down the rules.

She said their accidental "yes" day during a trip into Newcastle city centre, where the couple needed to buy new mobile phones. It started with a trip to the stationery and toy shop to "sweeten them up" before the tricky process of going to a phone shop with the kids in tow.

After Theo and Immy picked out treats with their Easter cash - including an £11 Sonic toy each and a £5 dinosaur for Theo - things evolved. Sarah, writing for Metro, explained: "They played with their toys so well, we let them decide what to have for lunch – although we needn’t have asked. They’d live off pizza if they had their way. So we took them for a margherita and, as the children’s meal came with ice cream, we let them share a scoop without putting up our usual resistance."

She said it "felt so good" that the children were then allowed to pick out a t-shirt each after Theo found a new pair of trainers. They then said yes to a request for a trip on the train around the shopping centre - resulting in "beaming" smiles all round.

Sarah said that she's well aware yes days can't happen every day. But she added: "But in that moment, I really wished it could. Sometimes the rules just need to be broken – by parents and children alike. And who knows, we may have more ‘yes days’ in the future and break a few more rules."
