Parents find armed police on street after dropping kids off at school

Parents returned from dropping their children off at school to find armed police had descended on their street.

Curate Road in Anfield was sealed off by police on Friday as armed officers surrounded a house. One man, who did not want to be named, said his partner was sat having a coffee when she saw armed police searching their garden.

He said: "My Mrs was having a coffee and saw his [a police officer] head turn. He's got a gun and he's sat in a bush and my cat is rubbing his head against him."

The man was one of many residents who were told they were not allowed back inside their homes after returning to the area from dropping their children off at school.

People living inside the cordon were told to get back inside their homes, with one officer heard shouting "you made the decision to come out, now you can't come back until this is done."

One man said: "When I left just before 9 everything was OK. I came back and this was all here."

Merseyside Police said two men were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. People were asked to avoid the area while a search was carried out.

A police spokesperson said: "We can confirm that armed police have been in Anfield this morning, Friday 17 March. At around 8.40am, officers attended Curate Road.

"Two men have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and a search remains ongoing. A road closure remains in place at Curate Road/Townsend Road as enquiries continue.

"Please avoid the area. Thanks for your patience and understanding."
