Paramedics Treat 16 In Sydney’s Inner West As 60 Y.O. Man Arrested Over Shooting

A 60-year-old man has been arrested after dozens of shots were fired from a unit in Sydney’s inner west, injuring multiple people and forcing parts of Croydon Park into lockdown on Sunday night.

Police said the incident began around 7.45pm, when shots were fired from a building on Georges River Road near Brighton Avenue.

NSW Ambulance confirmed paramedics treated 16 people at the scene. Two men were transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for further care, while the rest were treated for minor injuries, cuts from shattered glass, and shock. ABC News reported that a man in his 50s arrived at Canterbury Hospital with serious wounds to his neck and chest and was later transferred to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry told reporters late Sunday that gunshots had damaged vehicles and buildings in the area. “There’s been a significant number of shots discharged, and investigations will continue until we have a clearer picture,” he said.

Authorities estimate that anywhere between 50 and 100 rounds may have been fired.

Parry could not confirm if officers at the scene also fired their weapons, but said “the crime scene is still being examined”.

By 9.30pm, the Tactical Police Unit had taken a 60-year-old man into custody from inside the building. Several firearms, including a high-calibre rifle, were seized during the arrest, NSW Police confirmed.

The man was injured during the arrest and remains under guard at Bankstown Hospital. There has been no formal motive established yet, but police did not suspect terrorism. The man arrested is expected to be questioned and formally charged after being cleared by doctors.

“The 60-year-old man, he is undergoing medical treatment in hospital. Once that treatment is resolved, we will have him in custody and then we’ll speak further with him. But certainly there’s nothing in relation to history, in relation to any relation to gang or other associations that would indicate why this has occurred,” acting assistant commissioner for New South Wales Police, Trent King, told ABC RN.

Roads remained closed overnight as police examined the scene and organised the removal of damaged vehicles.
