Paralympics 2024: What does it take to be a Paralympian? - The Standard Podcast

Listen here on your chosen podcast platform.

Following another spectacular olympics this year, there’s more sport to come from Paris as the 2024 Paralympic Games get underway.

This year Team GB is made up of 220 athletes, and has the highest ever representation of female athletes.

The team is funded by the National Lottery, which has invested more than £300 million in supporting both grassroots sport and elite athletes since funding began.

Among the sports featured this year are blind football, para archery, wheelchair basketball and para taekwondo.

The opening ceremony takes place on Wednesday evening on Channel 4, and will feature alongside a documentary about the Team GB athletes, called Path to Paris: Paralympic Dreams.

Our senior editor and feature writer Katie Strick has spoken with a few Team GB Paralympians ahead of the competition, including Zak Skinner, a long jumper who was born with a severe vision impairment, and track and field athlete Stef Reid, who lost her right foot in a boating accident when she was 16 - who both appear in the Channel 4 documentary.

In this episode Katie discusses what she has learned from interviews with some of this year’s athletes, including the need for resilience, humour and a change in mentality to succeed in the games.
