Authorities in Paraguay have made a significant drug bust, seizing over 4 tons of cocaine with an estimated market value of $240 million. The massive drug haul was discovered concealed within a shipment of sugar that was en route to Belgium, as reported by the country's anti-drug agency Senad.
The operation, aptly named 'Operation Sweetness,' marks the largest cocaine seizure in Paraguay's history. The bust took place at the seaport in the capital city of Asuncion, where authorities intercepted the illicit cargo.
Senad revealed that the bust was a result of detecting a suspicious shipment, prompting a coordinated effort with other government agencies to uncover the drug trafficking operation. Ongoing investigations are focused on dismantling the criminal network responsible for orchestrating the transportation of the massive drug load, primarily destined for the European market.
Following the seizure, one individual, identified as a truck driver, has been apprehended for his alleged involvement in delivering the drug shipment to the seaport. Senad's Minister disclosed that the incident likely involved an organized criminal group.
Paraguay's President Santiago Peña emphasized that the country does not produce cocaine but is often exploited as a transit route for drug trafficking. He expressed determination to combat drug smuggling activities within Paraguay's borders, highlighting the need to prevent illicit substances from entering the country.
President Peña underscored the significance of the recent bust as a deterrent to organized crime groups, signaling a strong stance against drug trafficking through Paraguay. The successful operation sends a clear message that authorities are resolute in combating drug-related activities and safeguarding the nation's security.
