Pape Matar Sarr heartbreak, Lo Celso joy, Ledley King hope for Ndombele and Jack Clarke's chance

All but one of Tottenham Hotspur's loan players ended their seasons at the weekend with differing emotions.

The loan deals for Cameron Carter-Vickers, Troy Parrott, Kion Etete, Nile John and Kacper Kurylowicz had already come to an end at Celtic, MK Dons, Cheltenham, Charlton and Potters Bar Town respectively. Spurs had 11 loan players out on loan at sides in England, Scotland, France, Spain and Sweden during this second half of the season.

Another five players ended their loan spells at the weekend with one remaining out and away from the nest. Here's how the last group of Spurs loanees got on over the past week.

Pape Matar Sarr (Metz)

The 19-year-old's last game at Metz ended in heartbreak as they lost 5-0 at Mauricio Pochettino's PSG, with Kylian Mbappe hitting a hat-trick after signing his new deal and Boubacar Traore sent off for the visitors early in the second half.

Metz had given themselves a real chance of remaining in Ligue 1 with back-to-back victories with Sarr at the centre of it all, but their final day defeat and St Etienne's 79th minute equaliser at Nantes saw Metz drop out of the relegation play-off spot and into the bottom two.

Sarr played the full 90 minutes against the Ligue 1 champions, making two tackles and two interceptions and had a pass success rate of 85.7%.

The teenager played 34 times for the French strugglers this season, scoring once and laying on three assists, and he will now look to show Spurs what he's about when he arrives in N17 this summer.

Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon)

Ndombele's disappointing return to Lyon ended with a 19 minute appearance from the bench in their 2-1 win at Clermont. He did have enough time to make one key pass, take a shot and make two tackles, with a pass success rate of 95.5%.

Lyon ended up finishing eighth in Ligue 1 and Ndombele's loan spell saw him play 15 times, starting just seven matches after joining on loan on January transfer deadline day, with one goal and two assists to his name. It remains to be seen whether Lyon will pay the big £54m fee agreed to make his loan deal permanent this summer on that evidence.

Former Spurs captain Ledley King worked with Ndombele last season as part of Jose Mourinho's coaching staff and he told football.london: "I'd like to see him give more, push more at times. It has been frustrating because we know the talent's in there. At times, it seems like he needs to be someone who's happy in his surroundings and motivated to play football.

"I know he lost two of his good friends at the time, that shouldn't be an issue. He's a bit of an enigma. In terms of talent, he's right up there and we could do with him playing. When he plays at his best, he's an asset to the football club, but he hasn't been doing that on a consistent basis so it's frustrating."

Giovani Lo Celso (Villarreal)

Lo Celso finished his Villarreal loan spell this season with 90 minutes as they won 2-0 at Barcelona and secured seventh place and European football for next season.

The Argentine was once again playing in a forward role but he had to put in a shift at the Camp Nou to help his team to victory.

Lo Celso has impressed for Unai Emery's team since joining on deadline day in the January transfer window and Villarreal are believed to want to find a way to keep him, although there is no purchase option in his loan deal. The Argentine made 25 appearances for the La Liga side, with one goal and one assist, and he played a big part in their run to the Champions League semi-finals.

King is hoping that Lo Celso returns to Spurs to play under Conte: "There is no reason why he can't come right back into the club. I've seen him up close during my team there.

"I know he can probably operate in one of the positions further up the pitch and he play in the centre of midfield. He's a good versatile player, but again he falls into the category of having to come back to force his way into the manager's plans if he wants to stay at the football club."

Bryan Gil (Valencia)

Gil was substituted at half-time in Valencia's 2-0 win at home against Celta Vigo on Saturday.

The 21-year-old had been struggling with a hip injury last month and that may have played a part in his reduced minutes in games this month.

Gil made 17 appearances for the ninth-placed Spanish side, registering one assist since his switch from Tottenham, and helping them reach the Copa del Rey final. Valencia are believed to be keen on extending his loan into next season but whether Spurs want to send a player that cost more than £20million last season out on another loan remains to be seen.

Jack Clarke (Sunderland)

Jack Clarke tasted promotion joy in Saturday's League One Play-Off final as Sunderland beat Wycombe at Wembley Stadium.

The 21-year-old had helped Sunderland get to Wembley with a big assist in added time of the semi-final second leg against Sheffield Wednesday.

However, he was only handed a place on the bench but came on for the final half-hour at the national stadium. Clarke almost grabbed a great solo goal late on after a fine dribble, but the keeper thwarted him from close range.

Clarke appeared in 20 matches for Sunderland since arriving in January, scoring once and providing three assists - including a key contribution in the play-off semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday - as they secured a route back to the Championship.

Alfie Whiteman (Degerfors)

The 23-year-old goalkeeper will remain out in Sweden as their league only got going last month. He started once again as Degerfors lost 2-1 at Varbergs on Sunday in the Swedish Allsvenskan league.

Whiteman did his part in keeping the club in the Swedish top flight last season and will be hoping to get them back on track again during this campaign. Spurs do also have the option to recall him as part of the loan agreement if they were to need him back.
