When the Carolina Panthers officially made their move for now former Cleveland Browns star Baker Mayfield, their roster number went from 90 men to 91. So, somebody had to go.
That somebody, as announced by the team on Tuesday morning, was quarterback Davis Cheek.
The Matthews, N.C. native joined the organization back on April 30, as one of 14 initial free-agent signings following the 2022 NFL draft. He’d go on to stick into the No. 4 spot on the depth chart—so to speak—participating in rookie minicamp and team organized activities through the spring and summer.
