History
Carolina has dominated the preseason history of this matchup. The two teams faced off five times in exhibition play between 2002 and 2008, with the Panthers winning four of those clashes at a combined 78-point differential.
As far as the real games, Washington has commanded those of late. They’ve won three of the past four meetings—including a 27-21 victory in 2021—with an overall mark of 10-7 in the series.
What to watch for
In case you haven’t heard, there’s a quarterback battle going on. And although Rhule has shied away from providing us with any fine and/or juicy details about the competition, he did at least say both Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold will get a crack under center in this one.
Their time on the field will likely be brief, but we’ll be getting our first real look at this arms race between the 2018 draftees. Can Mayfield continue to distance himself from Darnold? Or will Darnold give the coaching staff something to think about moving forward?
We’ll also likely see a good chunk of play from the team’s top two rookies in offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu and fourth-string passer Matt Corral. How much of the blindside will the sixth overall pick see? And can Corral give fans an exciting sneak peek into the future?
