Following their first outing of 2023 training camp, the Carolina Panthers trimmed their roster down to 89 players—parting ways with wide receiver Marquez Stevenson. But they didn’t stay at that number for long.
As announced on Wednesday night, the team has signed another wide receiver—Javon Wims. Wims was one of 10 players who worked out for the Panthers on Tuesday.
After a short stint at Hinds Community College, the Carol City, Fla. native landed at the University of Georgia in 2016. There, he recorded 910 yards and eight touchdowns over a pair of seasons.
Wims was then selected by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL draft. His three-year stay in the Windy City, which was unfortunately headlined by his punch of then New Orleans Saints safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, resulted in 266 yards and two scores.
The 6-foot-2, 222-pound pass catcher has since picked up stops with the Las Vegas Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals between 2021 and 2022. He appeared in one game for Arizona this past season.
