Panthers reportedly called Jets about WR Denzel Mims

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule has never really hidden his affinity for familiar faces. So when his old Baylor University wideout Denzel Mims requested a trade this week, the following development we’re going to tell you about registered at about a 1.9 out of 10 on the “What a Surprise!” Scale.

According to Joseph Person of The Athletic, the Panthers have contacted the New York Jets about a potential trade for the third-year receiver.

The 6-foot-3, 207-pound pass catcher was drafted by the Jets in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. Mims, however, has yet to achieve the success that high of a selection would often warrant—having reeled in just 31 receptions for 490 yards and zero touchdowns over 20 games.

Given that Carolina’s wide receiver room is pretty crowded at the moment—especially with their own young second-rounder in Terrace Marshall Jr. trying to find his place in the league as well—Mims’ fit may be a questionable one. Regardless, there is a bit of recent business history—in addition to the past of Rhule and Mims—between the team’s two general managers. (See Darnold, Sam.)
