Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer admittedly did not have a statement prepared for the media after his selection of Bryce Young. But he, and the rest of the organization, were definitely prepared for what came to fruition on Thursday night.
Right from the jump, Fitterer told reporters that investing this year’s No. 1 overall pick into the University of Alabama quarterback was a move that was years in the making.
“I think, really, a couple of years ago when our area scouts went through, when Robert Haynes went through—they really liked him then,” he said. “Then, just over the last couple of years, the study of him was something they really felt strongly about. When we met in February, there was just overwhelming conviction for him during our draft meetings.”
Fitterer was then asked of the now famous conversation he had about the choice with head coach Frank Reich, one Reich propped up as an engagement of sorts.
“He likened it to a proposal so . . . that was interesting,” he replied with a laugh. “It was quick. It was pretty obvious. We already knew. I went in, just asked him. It was really a five-second conversation and then we moved on to, ‘Ok, what’s the plan next?’ What do we do next?”
Good question, Scott. What’s next . . . ?
