After yet another embarrassing outing in Week 5, the hot seat got even hotter for Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule. And now, less than 24 hours later, that seat has officially been vacated.
As announced by the organization late Monday morning, Rhule has been fired as the team’s head coach. He departs from his post with an overall record of 11-27.
Rhule, who had built an impressive résumé of developing college programs, was hired on Jan. 7, 2020 to lead Carolina’s rebuild to the tune of a seven-year, $62 million contract. His work at Temple University and Baylor University, in particular, caught the eyes of many league owners—particularly David Tepper.
Those hopes, obviously, were never realized. In addition to the .289 winning percentage, the worst ever for a Panthers head coach, the numbers and results have been nothing short of disappointing.
With the loss on Sunday, the team moved to 5-15 at home under Rhule. They’ve also lost 25 straight games, with an overall mark of 1-27, when allowing at least 17 points to their opponent.
Defensive pass game coordinator/secondary coach Steve Wilks will, as also announced by the release, serve as interim head coach.
