Panetta: Netanyahu likely to agree to deal for Gaza hostages

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu holds a press conference in Tel Aviv

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled that he is willing to continue military operations against Hamas in Gaza in order to target their leadership. However, former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta believes that Netanyahu's comments are part of a bargaining strategy and that ultimately he will agree to a deal.

Panetta states that Netanyahu understands the need to bring the conflict to an end in order to secure the release of hostages and establish a ceasefire. Additionally, there is growing pressure from within Israel to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and provide aid to those affected. Panetta believes that these factors will compel Netanyahu to seek a resolution.

Despite Netanyahu's remarks about preparing to fight in Rafa, Panetta suggests that targeted operations would be a more effective approach. Drawing on his experience after 9/11, Panetta explains how the United States successfully used counterterrorism operations to target and eliminate key figures within Al-Qaeda. He suggests that a similar strategy could be utilized against Hamas leadership.

Panetta emphasizes that the leadership of Hamas will not be confined to one location but will be scattered and hiding. Therefore, a sustained and targeted operation is necessary to bring those responsible for the recent conflict to justice. He cautions against charging into Rafa with a military force, as it may create additional political problems for Netanyahu.

In conclusion, Panetta believes that Netanyahu's tough stance is part of a negotiation tactic but, ultimately, a deal will be reached. He emphasizes the importance of targeting the responsible individuals, but advocates for a more focused and strategic approach rather than large-scale bombings. Panetta stresses the lessons learned from the successful counterterrorism operations deployed by the United States.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how negotiations will progress and whether Netanyahu will follow through with targeted operations or opt for a more comprehensive military approach. The looming humanitarian crisis and pressure to secure the release of hostages may ultimately compel all parties involved to seek a resolution and bring an end to the current hostilities.
