Panel says OBCs backward, need quota; Maharashtra govt tells SC complied with 'triple test'

MUMBAI: The Jayant Kumar Banthia Commission has recommended a maximum 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local body polls. "The reservation should be given in proportion to their population in each local body without affecting statutory reservation for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, and subject to the overall reservation limit of 50%," said the commission's report submitted on July 7.

The state moved the SC seeking directions to "notify the reservation pattern" for local bodies across the state as delineated in the report, which was annexed to its application. On Tuesday, the SC adjourned the hearing for a week.
